Following up on a previous post (sort of), I found a story from a real life news company that also happens to have a web site, today. Fairfax New Zealand Limited’s site, “Stuff.co.nz” has a story called, Make working fun, says expert. I’m not sure about the 10 to 80 figures that the story has, but toward the bottom of the story, it says “IBM’s virtual world Second Life had nine million inhabitants, $1.8m of economic activity each day and 43,000 businesses with a positive cashflow.”

I’m sure this is another case of somebody writing a news story about a topic that they know next to nothing about. They obviously listened to Cliff Dennett at an “IBM Forum” and managed to come away from listening to his speech, thinking that IBM actually “owned” Second Life.

Going back to a previous post and the comments on that post, this clearly shows the disconnection between traditional news or”old media” and somebody that’s actually involved in or at least knows something about the story. This is one of the reasons that I trust bloggers more than I do “old media”. This is also one of the reasons that calling a blog “news” is a bad idea, in my opinion. If it’s “news”, it’s going to get something wrong. If it’s a blog post, the person will actually know what they’re talking about, instead of just pasting a story to meet a deadline, without regard to the facts.
